The Road to No Abuse is Know AbuseTM

ctober is National Domestic Violence
Awareness month and there is no better
time to be aware of the statistics and the

actions that have been taken to eradicate dating
and domestic violence from our community.

Did you know that:

1 in 4 women will experience domestic
violence during her lifetime?

Women, ages 20 to 24, are at greatest risk of
becoming victims of domestic violence?

Without help, girls who witness domestic
violence are more vulnerable to abuse as
teens and adults?.

Without help, boys who witness domestic vi-
olence are far more likely to become abusers
of their partners and/or children as adults,
thus continuing the cycle of violence in the
next generation?

Preventive education is most effective

when taught at an early age. For more than
ten years, Jewish Family Service Association's

Know AbuseTM
program has
worked to
educate teens in
public and private middle and high schools in
Cuyahoga County about the warning signs of
abusive behavior in all relationships. Volunteer
teens from local area high schools are trained
to teach other teens about healthy relation-
ships and teen-dating violence.

"Peer-to-peer education is the key to the

Know AbuseTM program's success," explains
Ginny Galili, executive director of JFSA's
Families-at-Risk division. To date, more than
400 teen boys and girls have completed the
JFSA Know AbuseTM Peer Leadership training
and have stood before more than 10,000
teens to declare "The road to no abuse is Know
AbuseTM."

JFSA professionals are also available to

speak with parents about healthy teen rela-
tionships, teen-dating violence and bullying
issues. Likewise, the staff can provide training

for educators in grades 8-12 and assist in ad-
dressing school-wide strategies for preventing
bullying and dating violence.
